At the 19th Annual All Kids and Family Health Fair on Friday on Aug. 3, Chamberlain student nurses from the Chicago campus were on hand to provide education on blood pressure, asthma, diabetes and summer safety. The Health Fair was sponsored by Illinois State Senator William Delgado and the North West Side Health Advisory Committee.
The event drew a large Spanish-speaking population, and the group was accompanied by Spanish translators. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel stopped by to thank the Chamberlain group for their dedication in working with the diverse communities of Chicago, said Chamberlain student MeLissa Mei.
During the health fair, students performed more than 150 blood pressure screenings, as well as asthma screenings. They also took advantage of the opportunity to further educate the community about important health topics. While parents were having their blood pressure screened, the student nurses taught children about healthy food choices using colored cards. They also created and passed out hundreds of brochures on juvenile diabetes and summer safety.
