Giving back to the community is a class requirement in Professor Davida Murphy-Smith’s pediatric nursing course. Students recently lent a hand at a ski outing for an organization called Disabled Athlete Sports Association (DASA). Children of all ages with many types of disabilities were present at the event.

“Each of them was helped to ‘ski’ using different adaptive devices,” said Prof. Murphy-Smith. “It was wonderful to see their courage and inner strength.”

Other volunteer experiences for NR-322 have included participating in activities for children with cerebral palsy, including dance classes and, in the near future, swim lessons. Students have also cleaned the playroom on a pediatric cancer floor, provided babysitting for siblings of pediatric patients and raked and weeded a garden at one of their clinical sites.
